Dear Sean

I don’t do well with dares. In the fourth grade, I was double-dog dared to stand on a ladder and pee over the hood of my friend’s daddy’s Oldsmobile.

DEAR SEAN:

I just can’t read you anymore. At first you were cool, but now you’re a @!#$% dork. There have been tons of national events in the news… And you just ignore them… You’re all busy writing about your stupid dog and @#$%.

Sometimes I just want to say, “Nobody cares about your dumb dog!”

I dare you to write me back,
AIN’T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR SEAN OF THE SOUTH

DEAR AIN’T NOBODY:

I don’t do well with dares. In the fourth grade, I was double-dog dared to stand on a ladder and pee over the hood of my friend’s daddy’s Oldsmobile.

I didn’t have enough back-pressure in my nine-year-old bladder to clear the hood. My friend’s daddy nearly had a heart attack.

My mama made me peel potatoes until I was thirty.

Anyway, I just read your letter aloud to Ellie Mae. I wish you could’ve seen her face. She’s crushed. She wears her feelings on her collar, you know.

Today, Ellie Mae woke earlier than normal. Most often, she rises at the crack of noon. This morning, she woke at 5 A.M. because of a persistent ear infection.

I’ve taken her to the vet six times in the last five months. I took her yesterday.

You’ll be thrilled to know the vet says her ears are getting better. He also says that her problem is just part of having long, floppy, magnificent, voluptuous, comely, silken, ears.

Then, he rubbed her belly and said, “I think Ellie is one of my favorite patients.”

His favorite.

A remark like that deserves celebration. I took Ellie to Pet Smart as a reward. She sniffed a few employee hindparts, then made friends with a Corgie named Jim.

I bought her a toy duck and a rawhide to the tune of thirty-two bucks. I know that’s pricey, but recall, if you will, what the vet said.

Anyway, I have been throwing toy ducks for Ellie Mae since the invention of hate-email. She darts into the Choctawhatchee Bay and swims after them until she reaches the coast of Indonesia.

You’ve never seen anything like it.

So. Where was I? Ah, yes. After we left Pet Smart, I met a friend for lunch. We ate take-out Mexican in his office. Ellie laid in the corner, eating a rawhide.

“Can you believe,” I pointed out to my friend. “That Ellie’s vet called her his FAVORITE dog?”

My pal swallowed his food and said, “Why do I have a feeling you’re going to write down whatever I say in your blog?”

Ellie and I rode home, listening to Willie Nelson on the radio. I believe she likes Willie Nelson. This, I can tell by the way she…

Wait. I almost forgot.

You didn’t want to know about my “stupid” dog. You wanted to read about current events, statues, riots, or misguided folks on the evening news.

Maybe you wanted me to rant over something controversial. Maybe you wanted me to be angry. Maybe you wanted cussing.

Well, whatever it was that you wanted, you certainly didn’t want to read trivial things about an allegedly “stupid” Black and Tan hound I love so much.

I’m sorry, friend. But if you’ve read this far…

You just did.

Dear Sean, Please keep doing what you’re doing. Your words feel like a balm … a reminder of the good people, places, and moments left to be discovered.

Best wishes to you and yours,

Just so, in a world consumed with self importance it is a “balm” to read beautifully simple accounts of love and appreciation. Sean you have become one of my favorite writers. Having lived in Alabama my entire life, your written accounts strike a cord with me. I appreciate the depth you see in the simplest of things, in the ordinary lives that are so often overlooked. Thank you for sharing this gift with us.

Hey about ear infections, my dog also has magnificent and comely ears that get infected. She’s a good dog, very trusting and biddable unless you have an ear peroxide bottle in your hand. Last ear infection, 3-5 years ago, the vet filled her ear canal with a antibiotic laced plastic ear plug. Lari, her name—long story, blamed the insertion and the next 5 minutes of discomfort on me. Then she forgot all about it. I kept her out of the water for two weeks though

Thank you, Sean, for your daily columns. I read them first thing in the morning to start my day off right. We can read that other crap any time, but good news & things about regular people, not so much. And thank you for the Ellie Mae stories, our 4 dogs would probably like her.

Instead of writing to tell you, why didn’t that unkind person just cease reading your blog? It’s as simple as changing the channel when a television show comes on that’s not to one’s liking. Switch to something else! Let me go on record and say that I love reading your stories, whether they’re about Ellie Mae, Alabama, certain people you meet, or other topics. Newspapers and TV news reports contain so much negativity, it’s refreshing to savor your slice of life that turns an ordinary day into something more digestible than the media broadcasts. Hang in there and keep on writing, Sean.

    Dear Sean:

I awoke this morning grumbling with a little bit of self-pity thrown in. Long sigh to “here we go again” which means within an entanglement of leashes, jumps, and licks. Then pour my coffee only to come sit at my desk and open the anger I am noting here of late on the Internet. I deactivated my Facebook for that very reason as well as personal.

Of course, I don’t need to delve into a long lengthy note, but I just want to tell you, there are no persons that can replace our “Ellie Mays” Would you give her a hug from Jill in Tn. I am going to listen to some Willie Nelson now.

Ahh…some people just make me want to tell them what our Mamas always told us: “If you don’t have something good to say..then don’t say anything!” I feel so sorry for him that his Mama didn’t tell him that. But, Sean, you know as well as I do that the most unhappy people are usually those who, rather than contribute to solving problems, tend to get their jollies from adding to them. If he wants anger and gore…just let him watch the evening news! But, should he ever want happy and down-to-earth great stories…then he should mind his manners….and read what YOU write!! Have a great day!

Thank you for sharing your life Sean. We all see something we identify with and wish we could put in words. My husband came to hear you Friday night at the Chapel. My husband’s mom was divorced raising 5 kids by herself. Times were tough for them. They did a paper route together when he was in jr high school. He’ll hear an old song and say, “Ah, that’s a paper route song” . He recalls those days often. His mom has passed but she holds a special place in our hearts. She gave everything she could to raise 5 great people. He laughed when you mentioned the early mornings folding newspapers. He walked that walk too. That’s what we all need to here. That we walk the same walk.

THEY, the pols who determine what it is we are supposed to care about or not care about, and their media tools who function to echo their talking points or to spin them, don’t care about us. They don’t even care about the people they pretend to care about. So, given the choice to read about jerks acting stupidly, or Ellie Mae at the vet, I’ll take Ellie Mae every time.

Yesterday, while in Mineral VA, 109 miles from home, my motorcycle’s battery didn’t have the juice to start the motor. Within seconds an old timer pulled along side us to help. He got out of his ancient Ranger, and whipped out some battery cables, and started my bike up. He stayed with me until I pulled away. Good thing too, because I stalled out because I had the kickstand down. Darned safety features. He was 80 years old, shaped like the letter S when he stood sideways, with bowled legs. He is the kind of guy you write about. HE, and how he lives is important, not cowards in white sheets or black masks. There may be a few thousand jerks, but there are millions of decent people, like the old timer. Ellie Mae is more important to me than the jerks your former reader prefers to read about. Keep up the good work Sean.

I post funny photos, funny sayings, cute and fuzzy animals, and every day, photos of my favorite, 30 yr. old rescued, quarter horse palomino, and other animals who reside at the horse rescue. Why?, because I love that horse more than anything. He is my childhood dream come true, at the age of, @#$^%…. I love animals, they make me happy, plain, and simple. I’ve been told, nobody wants to see those photos every day. Well, guess what? I don’t give a fat, red, rat’s rear! I make a special point to read daily. It calms me. Let the media tell us all the bad stuff. Kept my memories of Mobile, Birmingham and the South alive, simple and happy. Lifeel is good.

Keep going full steam ahead! It is quite refreshing to hear about good people and good deeds because those certainly are not featured on the “news.” I look forward to reading all of your posts….I am glad you have found an abundance of good things to write about—too bad the news media can’t do the same. I think it is easier for them to take the low road the feature the chaos, hate, politics, and negativity. I know there are good people in this world – thank you for writing about them!

    Dear Sean,
I read your blog BECAUSE you do not write about current events. I read your blog because I grew up stretched out across my grandmother’s front porch scratching her collie, Leonard’s ears and wondering when I’d be old enough to borrow my momma’s pearls to wear to Sunday School. I’m a long way from that now, except when I read your blog.
Keep on keeping on- there’s enough venom in this world already and you are my antivenin. And let’s do pray for that other fellow, sometimes we all have to rise above our upbringing.
    Warmest regards,

I got to “meet” you Friday night…actually I sat to your left while you spoke. Your guitar died, but you really didn’t need it. The song you sang moved me to tears. You are as a good of a story teller and you are a story writer. It is one thing to be able to write a good story – and you do! But it is quite another to tell a story as beautifully and poetically as you did Friday in The Chapel of the Waters. You are a gracious man.

I’ve almost completely given up on TV and you know, I really don’t miss it. I’m not saying I have my head in the sand…no, I write my congressman and senators on a regular basis, even getting a call on occasion. I’m a little more selective about my sources for things I want them to do. Reading your posts is one of the things that allows me to move forward with my day without feeling hopeless about the world. There are enough idiots writing about riots, protests, and politics – thank you for not doing the same. Your blog is about what I need to hear: life. Just regular old, Southern life. Nothing more controversial than whether you should put mayonnaise on a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Life that’s good, fun, hard, happy, and sad. Because that’s what life is; the other stuff just gets in the way. Well, gotta go to work. I’d protest that, but my family would get hungry if I don’t go.
