Dear Sean

But, a “hater?” No, sir. I don’t hate anything, nor any establishment, nor any person. And I don’t hate angry readers who tell me to go straight to… Well, you know.

DEAR SEAN:

You are a hater, so I hate you. Seriously, I’m finished with you. I’m disappointed in the negative statement you made yesterday about Chick-fil-A!

You wrote [quote]: “…we played [music] at the grand opening of a Chick-fil-A. I’m not proud of that.”

I was mortified when I read that you actually hate Chick-fil-A… And all I can say to you is… [bleep, bleep, bleepity bleep].

It’s been real,
TIME-TO-QUIT-SEAN-DIETRICH

DEAR TIME-TO-QUIT:

Hi. How’s your day been going? I hope you are well.

Listen, I don’t mean to burst your bubble, but I’m reading your letter while eating a Chicken Biscuit, sitting inside a Chick-fil-A. That’s right, I’m in a booth at THIS VERY MOMENT, writing you.

In fact, I just read your words aloud to the woman sitting next to me. Louisa, is her name. She has an eight-year-old daughter with her.

After I read your words, Louisa’s daughter remarked: “Wow, that person needs a nap.”

Her words, not mine.

Anyway, maybe you don’t know this, but my mama worked at Chick-fil-A when I was young. To make ends meet, Mama made waffle fries, scrubbed kitchens, mopped the floors, and wore a uniform. My sister worked here, too.

This place was good to my family. And by “good,” I mean: they helped us survive. Hate them?

Do what?

Why, if you ask me you couldn’t find better fried chicken if you looked in Aunt Bee’s skillet.

Admittedly, I don’t know anything about the organization. But I DO know that during my youth, I’d visit Chick-fil-A to see Mama’s smiling face. And those memories are plated in gold.

Oh, but you didn’t want to know that. You wanted to be angry. So okay. Let’s talk about the sentences you didn’t like:

“…we played [music] at the grand opening of a Chick-fil-A. I’m not proud of that.”

Journey through time with me, friend. Let’s travel backward several years.

[Cue dream-sequence music]

There I am. Can you see me in the distance? I’m a gangly, college-aged kid. I’m so skinny I only need one back pocket. I’m playing electric keyboard outside a Chick-fil-A, sweating to death.

Men in suits just cut a ribbon with giant golden scissors. There are free samples everywhere. Lots of good old-fashioned, Budweiser-less, Southern Baptist fun happening.

I’m playing “Up the Lazy River” in the key of “F.”

And I’m miserable. No. I’m humiliated. Because I feel like a loser.

You’ll note: the Dream Gig for any aspiring musician is Carnegie Hall, the Jefferson Complex, or Dollywood. Not a joint with a drive-thru window and a ketchup station.

Long ago, I wanted to be a serious pianist—it sounds stupid now, but it wasn’t then. I’ve played piano since age nine. Music has been a big piece of my life.

A few days before playing Chick-fil-A, I’d left a construction jobsite for an audition at a big university.

I’ll never forget it. I wore a necktie. I sat behind a grand piano. There were thirty professors sitting in one room, holding clipboards. I played “Stars Fell on Alabama.”

They practically laughed at me. One professor even said, “Come back when you learn to read music.”

I cried in my truck for an hour.

I auditioned at ANOTHER university that same week. I bombed again. And again.

My youthful dreams sort of fell apart. And finally, I decided I’d be better off joining a monastery where monks shaved their heads and called each other by the name “Chip.” Yes. I would become a Chip Monk. (Ba dum ching!)

So getting back to that grand opening.

There I am. A complete failure. A kid who wanted to be somebody, but finds himself playing “Up the Lazy River.” In the musical world, we call this: “hitting rock bottom.”

So, no. I’m not proud of playing a fast-food gig for twenty-five bucks. I wasn’t proud then, I’m not proud now. I won’t lie.

But that’s life, I guess. I’ve had lots of crummy jobs. I dug drainage ditches, hung drywall, installed cabinets, drove commercial lawn mowers, installed wood floors, framed houses, and played fast-food joints for quick cash.

I never made Carnegie Hall, and to be honest I barely made community college.

But, a “hater?” No, sir. I don’t hate anything, nor any establishment, nor any person. And I don’t hate angry readers who tell me to go straight to…

Well you know.

So thanks for the letter. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a Chicken Biscuit to eat. By the way, Louisa and her daughter say, “Hi.”

Don’t forget to take that nap.

In today’s whacko political environment we are being beat over the head with identity politics. CFA is ground zero in that fight. Without the background info, the “not proud” reference sounds like fighting words in that battle. They clearly were not. As a relatively new reader of yours, I’m enormously relieved identity politics isn’t in your DNA.
The sad truth is that we are being bombarded with negative crap, and are forced to choose a side if you listen to the negative crap. The best chicken sandwich, made by great people in a great restaurant has become a political decision as well as a dining choice.

Dear Sean, so many of your stories bring back nostalgic moments of people’s yesterdays, or ones that should have been; and, I have sent many to friends because of the “heart and soul” with which you write.

So I must admit that when I read “Friends” I was surprised at the last sentence about playing at Chick-fil-A. I read it a couple of times but still was confused about your meaning.

Your response to “Time to Quit…” brought to mind the lesson learned a long time ago about asking questions for clarification when I was/am confused about something.

If we don’t do that, we learn another lesson–that to assume, without knowing, where another person is coming from makes an “ass” out of “u” and “me.”

So, Sean, thanks for clarifying, forgive me for (almost) assuming without asking, and keep writing about life’s nostalgic and precious moments and the people who made/make them happen. We need the joy, smiles, laughter, and happy tears your stories bring to our souls.

God’s Blessings on you and your family ~

Dear Sean, I hope that writer takes that suggested nap and eats a big helping of crow, too. I don’t know how they took that you hated Chick Fil-A, it’s just that you weren’t proud of that particular job. We all have those things in our past.

By the way, musical fame may not have been in your future, but being a beloved writer to many is. I’ll toast you with a chicken biscuit any day!

I knew when I read the original story that you would likely see some backlash. I am very liberal and have many LGBTQ friends and to my knowledge most of them, if they like chicken, still eat at CF. I eat at CF even though I don’t agree with their politics. I still shop at Hobby Lobby, for nick knacks, not politics. The fact is I don’t agree with the majority of my friends and families political views and they don’t agree with mine, but we don’t “hate” each other. Granted there are those who spew a lot of hateful rhetoric on social media. I asked a friend a few days ago why he kept saying such hateful things about liberals. His response was, “I’ll stop when they stop.” I think we all need a big ole nap!

The paragraph in question was very poorly written if it requires a defensive explanation the next day. I think if you had included a bit of the back story in the original story it would have provided the insight necessary to understand what your “not proud” statement was really referring to. I can’t read minds to know what you really meant your words to convey. And I shouldn’t have to be a long-time reader (which I am) to presumably “get it” because I didn’t.

I think people “assume” what they want. It never occurred to me when I read “I am not proud of that” that it meant you didn’t like CFA. I figured you just didn’t like playing paultry gigs. FYI no CFA opening in my town even had a band. Just because you didn’t like those jobs you held doesn’t demean the job – just means they weren’t your cup of tea. Geez people get their noses in a twit over thinking things.

As to CFA, never been to one (not sure we have them in our region) and never heard of them until the flap over their position on a particular social issue. When I read your reference I wondered what part of that gig you weren’t proud of, the politics of the venue, your own performance, something you said or did that day that you wish you hadn’t, or any number of other possibilities? But I wan’t foolish enough to pick one possibility and run with it. Anyway, Mama taught me to give folks the benefit of the doubt, when there is one. Let me pose this question to all of you who are still trying to say that Sean was in the wrong or needed to clarify what he meant (which he owed no one an explanation, in my opinion): What would it matter if he didn’t agree with CFA’s religious stance (as some like to call it) or politics (as I think is the better word)? Is that the end all for you fair-weather friends? Is that the make or break? Is that reason enough to criticize and quit reading him? Is he not entitled to his own opinions? From reading the comments on his stories over the years, it’s clear that people take away what they want from his stories–maybe some assume he’s conservative because that’s what they read into his writings, while others may assume he’s liberal because that’s what they gather from his writings. As I stated yesterday, I have NEVER read a story of Sean’s where he took any sort of political stance. So what if he did disagree with CFA on their stand against same-sex marriage? Does that make him a bad person? NO! It may make him different than you, but that’s what makes the world go ’round.

And just as a side note, CFA decided that it was best to stay out of that debate and released this statement in July 2012:

“Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.”

I am simply mortified by the intolerance I am reading in the words of so many of you. I just don’t understand why you think Sean of the South needs to agree with you in order for you to continue to read him. I guess in the simplest of terms it boils down to arrogance. Some people are so arrogant that they do not believe they could be wrong or that there could be another opinion, other than their’s, that is right. It just seems completely contrary to the message Sean shares everyday.

You have done so well, Sean, please don’t stop writing now! Love your stories about the humanity of the people you meet. And, Thelma Lou stories are just the greatest!

Maybe a nap and a “crying closet” too would help. I love your writing. And I love Chic-Fil-A too. Keep em coming my friend.

Social media brings out the hatred in people, we all need to agree to disagree on a lot of big issues. Once we do that we need to stop all the ugly rhetoric and work toward solving some of the real problems that face this great nation. So let’s all have a biscuit with whatever you prefer on it and get to work. I love your daily musings and plan to read more of your work as soon as I can. I would not spend too much time on the folks who take offense at a comment about Chick Filet because for a lot of people around Atlanta Chick Filet is their church or at least as close to church as they ever get.

Hi Sean, I have to admit when I read that post I did a “what did he say”? But, I immediately and I mean IMMEDIATLY, knew you did not mean what I thought you meant. Anyway, we love your posts, we love you and yours. Give Thelma Lou a hug and tell Jamie to take good care of you both! Roll Tide!!

That writer who chastised Sean for his comment on Chick Fil- a needs to read all the words Sean writes, not to just pick out one sentence. The insight Sean has into the human race is beautiful and loving.

It is this part of your heart and spirit that I try to immolate (gosh I hope I spelled that correctly and that it is the word I am meaning to use….google isn’t always the be all to end all; bless their hearts). What a kind and gentle manner for chopping someone off at the knees (bless his heart).
As always, I sure appreciate and love you, every single day.
And now it is nap time for me and my 2 fur-baby girls! Fran

Sad that there are people who get angry about a few words and don’t read all the words. I love Chic-Fil-A because it will always remind me of my beloved husband. We met right after he graduated college and we still went to a few fraternity parties. The next day my husband always wanted to go to Chic-Fil-A because he claimed a chicken sandwich would cure a hangover! I will miss him the rest of my life, and I still eat at Chic-Fil-A.

Nice, even if the tweet did seem to be asking for…an opportunity to clarify it with the whole story.

I wonder how many times people have gotten angry at me for not explaining a fleeting comment? Probably a lot! If you’d have explained all that in your story, you’d have lost the subject completely. I do hope your arm hair and eyebrows have grown back. Next stop; Could be a good idea to get a new grill if it’s still tasting like gasoline. ?

I’m still trying to figure out why people love Chic Fil A so much. It’s employees are friendlier and more courteous than most and the food is tasty. But, boy for what you get, it is EXPENSIVE. It is often less costly at a chain restaurant for a meal than at CFA. BTW, I ignored the sentence about not being proud of playing at a CFA opening. Who WOULD consider that one of life’s most accomplished moments?

I knew exactly what you meant when I first read it the other day. I even told my wife what you meant. Maybe it’s just a common sense thing. Seemed like it to me at the time. Anyway, anyone who has been following you for any amount of time should know better that that!
You’re a good soul Sean! Keep it up.
