Dear Sean

DEAR SEAN:

You’re such a #%^**!!ing idiot and I am so unbelievably disappointed in you after reading your last column.

Before you try to shut me down or fight back, I think if you read through some of the comments left by others on your last post you’ll realize that I’m not alone… When you wonder why you’ve lost all your faithful readers and you’re all alone, know that it’s because of your own insensitive words.

I’ll admit that you deceived us all. My husband and I thought you were a good guy, but your insensitivity to the serious divisions facing the country right now is sickening to me. You are wrong, wrong, wrong. America does suck, and by refusing to admit it so do you.

Also, your whole “it’s a wonderful life” attitude and take on life is pure B.S., too.

You honestly represent the main problem with this country… Nobody cares what you have to say about anything anyway so please do us all a favor and just shut the *#&$! up.

DEAR FRIEND:

Okay.

So glad you made that your column! If we occasionally look at people like this, the rest of us can truly celebrate all that is true and good and right about this great country and the author who points us to that fact daily. I love this world and especially this great country through your beautiful eyes, Sean!

One of the most accurate statements I’ve ever read in this comments section!!! “I, too, read your daily column so I will never ever ever end up viewing the world the way that people without hope do!!!” Thank you Carey! Outstanding. So Sean…to many others I add my voice, Keep on keeping the main thing the main thing. Giving people hope that there is ultimate good in the world. Most of this vitriol will go away once people realize that we don’t want a few people in Washington deciding every detail of our lives and that our states will make better decisions for those who live there. It’s going to be okay. Okay?

Sean, I sincerely hope you take the advice from this person, because they were 100% spot-on in their assessment of you. As a matter of fact, I’d be willing to bet your friend Michelle would even be disappointed in your last column and how you are so insensitive to things she’s advocated for her entire life. My wife, who happens to be one of her childhood and lifelong best-friends, thought about reaching out to her to ask her if she read your last column. I can assure you that if she did, Michelle would probably be writing a different column about you vs the the one that exposed us to you. And unlike you, she’s a legit writer for a legit newspaper!

There are very few “legit” newspapers anymore and that comes from someone who was a photojournalist with a small newspaper, N3ØWULF. And you have no idea what Michelle would have felt. Why do all you people think some right has been taken away by the Supreme Court when all the decision does is return the right to the states where it belongs.
I can see why people like you use some sort of acronym for their signature so no one knows who he/she/it really is.

Richard Owen, it because of people like you who are absolutely clueless on why Roe v Wade won in the original Supreme Court decision. Yes, abortion may have been the catalyst case that got it to be reviewed in the Court, but the case before the court was actually about protecting all peoples Constitutionally recognized 14th Amendment right to autonomy and privacy. And when the Court of that time ruled in favor of Roe they were ruling in favor of her 14A rights to not be trampled on by Wade or anyone else. And last I checked, that’s exactly what the Supreme Court is supposed to do, intervene when various state laws attempt to infringe upon anyones Constitutionally protected right. However, what the current SCOTUS did was actually in violation of the Establishment Clause of the 1st Amendment by overturning a previous SCOTUS ruling on the grounds of religious beliefs of idiots and their gay theology that says “sodomy is a sin, but incest is okay!” And speaking of returning the decision on abortion, many states already have “trigger laws” that are going to outright ban abortion, including in cases of rape and incest, and they’re going to punish any providers and/or organizations/people that assist these women in going to another state where it’s still legal. And while I’m on topic of the 14A being obliterated, keep in mind that HIPAA and ADA laws are an extension of that Amendment, which means your rights to privacy in those matters have been obliterated as well. But thanks for proving your own ignorance on the real issue at hand. Just remember, once you’ve allowed the government to strip away one Constitutionally protected right then don’t get mad when they come for the rest of them, including your 1A right to have all the idiotic religious beliefs that you do.

Sorry to tell you this but IDGAF who you are, when I see Constitutionally protected rights being stripped away from fellow citizens, while the 1A gets trampled on as well, I have a problem with it. And if you or anyone else have a problem with it then know this, I’ll gladly exercise my 2A rights to protect all other rights outlined in the Constitution by you or anyone else. I have a right to protect my fellow man and woman from terrorists, domestic and foreign, and right now you’re on the side with the domestic terrorists.

Wow. That person was just a bit upset, eh? Well, different people are what makes the world go around. I, for one, so appreciated your positive thoughts. I had an experience a couple of weeks ago in one of our local “Mom and Pop” restaurants. It was a busy morning, the cook had burned herself and was moving (understandably) a bit slower than usual, so the waitress let me know it might be a bit of a wait from the outset. I told her I had nowhere to be for hours and was perfectly fine. I observed folks talking and laughing, kids playing, and the nice man at the table next to me got up and refilled our coffee for us when the waitress got busy and was a bit behind. He and his wife shared their creamer and jelly. A LOT of positive things I observed sitting there. It just felt so good to see folks being kind to each other. There are ALWAYS good things out there, we just have to see them AND share them. I appreciated your post. It’s much needed. And for those who didn’t appreciate it, ok. That’s how you feel. It’s valid. There is a lot wrong right now, but it doesn’t mean we can’t stop and look for those moments that can make us smile despite the crappy stuff. Maybe watch a film called “Life is Beautiful” (1997). It’s about a family who is captured and put in concentration camps during WW2. The small son was put in with his father and to help his son not be afraid, he made a sort of a “game” out of all that was going on. It sounds crazy, I know, but it really impacted me and the way I look at life. Give it a watch. It will hopefully help your readers to rethink some things.

When “loyal” readers say you have “let them down” by expressing an opinion contrary to their own, just know you have supported and encouraged 10 fold more readers.
I am with you, as are many of my family members. WE LOVE AMERICA! For all our faults and failings, we are still the greatest country in the world! Why do thousands of immigrants want to come here?

I appreciate your positive outlook on life and finding and sharing the good in the world. There is a lot of division and hatred in our country and much of it is fueled by social media. Your are right to keep focusing on what is good. The USA is still one of the best countries to live in, where we have freedom of speech. Unfortunately , that very freedom is part of why we have so much hatred being spread. Keep being the shining light that you are. One of my favorite scriptures is Philippians 4:8 that reminds on us to dwell on what is good, lovely, praiseworthy, etc.

I’m just an 82 year old lady who can relate to the many references of potluck church dinners, the way my three grown children used to be able to go all around our neighborhood playing til bedtime. Now they all live away, don’t see them much and your wonderful humor and sweet stories of giving credit where credit is due is what gets me through many days. I’m truly blessed to be in great health, can still do my own work and have a truly amazing testimony to how angels or God was in my seat in 2015 in a most horrific single car wreck during a three hour drive home from seeing my oldest granddaughter graduate college. I was so sleep deprived from taking care af a husband with Alzheimer’s. I am truly a walking miracle!! So please continue, as you always do, with your wonderful funny, sometimes sad but always life lifting stories and humor. Thank you so much.

    Dear Sean,
While I think there are some serious problems in America that need to be addressed, I also think it does no harm to point out the good things we have left. There will always be nay-sayers, pessimists, people who even think of themselves as ‘realists’, but that doesn’t cancel the fact that there is still a lot of good around. There are good people doing good things in sometimes hellacious situations, just because those things need to be done. I appreciate you pointing those people and things out to us.
A steady diet of what passes for news these days is enough to make anyone snap. It’s a good idea to take a little time to appreciate the good things that do still exist. And it doesn’t hurt anything to do your best to add to the list of people who are trying to do good things by becoming one of them. It’s much too easy to stand on the sidelines and hurl filth at people who are trying to make a difference. Those are the ones I try to ignore. There’s no sense in making a bad situation worse. But there is much to be said for sticking your neck out to try to make your little corner of the world a better place.
No, we cannot fix all that is wrong with the country, or with our state, or with our county, or with our town, or even with our neighborhood. But we can work on fixing what comes our way. If everyone were willing to do that, then most problems would soon not be quite so bad, and sometimes, those problems would just cease to exist. There are folks around who are doing that very thing. And you’re one of them.
So, please, do not even consider shutting up. Don’t you dare! Don’t give in to the nay-sayers just because they are loud and unruly and demanding. Stand your ground. Continue to do what you do best — hold up the mirror so we can see ourselves a bit more clearly.

Wow. I’m just ….. at a loss, One thing I will agree on is that, yes, things suck in our country. But, we have been through the ringer time and time again and guess what? We’re still here. And we are here because we have one specific super power… resiliency. To have that means we need and thrive on pushing forward. Do negativity and harsh words do that? Help us move forward? NOPE. Stories and writing from people like Sean help HEAL. HEAL. Look the meaning of HEAL up. Right now. Do it. It’s what we need, exponentially. And this is what people like Sean provide. But because of your completely frustrated and blameful email…. We were left with SILENCE from one of the most amazing and uplifting story tellers that so many of us depend on to bring a sense of calm and love to this chaos. So BEFORE anyone fires off another frustrated email, basically pooping on an amazing human that helps the rest of the 99.9% of us that look forward to each and every one of his stories and insights…. CHECK YOURSELF. Take your frustrations out on your Senators, Congress, Federal Government, local government… or others that can actually (supposedly) Force change. Stop putting it on those who are trying to give us hope and peace in uncertain times. LOVE, ME.

Yes, Jennifer, we need to be taking this out on our senators Congress federal government local government by voting. Get the vote out. Get the haters out of office the ones that supported the last president six years ago Who promoted hate spewed hate every day day in and day out and the ones who are still defending him to this very day. It is obvious they are not watching the hearings, if they were paying attention they would realize he lied to them and is STILL promoting The big lie. If you we’re watching the hearings you realize that most of the witnesses were Donald Trump’s top men and NOT Democrats,And then all of them told him over and over again before January 6 that, indeed, he had lost the election. If you were not aware of this fact that most of these witnesses during these hearings are Republicans telling all of us what Donald Trump knew before January 6 then you are not paying attention.

      Reply
      • Susie - June 27, 2022 2:13 pm

AND…… if any of you out there sent money to Donald Trump while he was promoting the big lie and telling you that the money would go toward finding out the truth of the election after he knew he had lost, then if you can prove somehow or have a record of that you sent him money, hold onto that evidence because eventually he may have to pay you back. They are going after him for raising money under false pretenses and wire fraud. So if you send him money and have proof don’t lose that proof yet.

Also, while I am on a roll, if you have not been watching the hearings, I encourage you to google on YouTube or whatever media site, the testimony of the two poll workers, amother and daughter, that were harassed by none other than Donald Trump himself and Rudy Giuliani himself. Their testimony is heartbreaking and if you watch that I think you might draw the same conclusion. you really do need to hear what they went through. It’s the 21 minute testimony, I believe.

Sean- Can I just say that as a fairly new reader on your daily blog, I can’t even begin to agree with this person.

I wake each day and read my Bible and then your blog. Your words inspire me and encourage me to find the “stories” all around me, to pay attention to the simple people with profound truth tucked inside, to mine the purpose God has put me on this planet.

Even the person that wrote this has a story. I kinda wonder how he really feels.🤣

First, did someone REALLY write that letter to you? If so, they should be ashamed of themselves!!! Unbelievable!!!
I do believe there are a lot of wounded, angry, out-of-control people in this world. But I do not believe they are in the majority!!! For every person murdered in senseless violence there were at least 10 people delivering meals on wheels or mowing someone’s lawn as a kindness or helping with diapers for a baby or… for the rest of this list I read your column!!!
So, please DO NOT STOP! We need to be reminded and encouraging stories told about the multitude of good still here. Yes, evil exists, but the goodness of God lived through good people needs to be proclaimed!!! THANK YOU and please Keep On Keeping On!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. There are many issues facing our country, BUT, this is still the greatest country in the world. If you just focus on all that is negative, that’s all you see. If you reframe your focus of the whole, you will see all the good that is present in our country, and as Sean has written, there is a lot of good. So, we have a choice to either focus on the good or focus on the negative. Only focusing on the negative will cause you to “suck” too. As I like to call people who spew negativity, you become a joy sucker that just sucks joy right out of you. Is your c hi oice.

Yes, our country has A LOT of problems and we do seem to be heading down a dark road many times, but I think that there are still more good people than bad and more good things out there than bad. Yes, you have to open your eyes and look to see them, but that’s why you turn off your television and don’t listen to the news media. Those are NOT the places to find sunshine and hope!! Thank you for writing the good stories – the positive side – the uplifting blogs – for finding and reporting the overlooked and unseen goodness that is out there and showing every day beauty.

Sorry it had to be you, and you just getting over the flu. (I hope Jaimie didn’t catch it, too!) Makes me think the writer is about 12 yrs old, emotionally. Such vitrupritive eruptions are exactly the outpouring of Evil. If the writer thought to influence anyone, he’s miscalculated on a massive scale. I get it. People really need to be heard and have their experience validated, especially if they have experienced a trauma. This country has been a bit trauma producing, for some more than others. There is also this little psychological principal called projection. When people are angry and finger pointing, it’s usually about them. I really hope this person gets heard and seen and loved and helped in their lives and shown another way. Lots of people lash out if that’s what they’ve been taught to do. That doesn’t make it right or NICE. This country and its people are some of the most beautiful things I have ever seen or experienced. I feel awfully bad for this human that they don’t know that deep in their bones. I hope that all the majesty that is, lands on their house and fill them with the beauty that is humanity and this land.

It IS a wonderful life…if you make it so! The late JFK’s statement is apt with anything you care to plug in. For example on marriage, ask not what your spouse can do for you, but what you can do for your spouse. Remember when you were first in love? This was a piece of cake then, don’t lose it! Now sub the word spouse with life. See, Jack was right, the ball is always in your court. And so it is with our country.

God’s economy of servitude goes against our selfish human nature. John 3:16. That’s where you earn meaningful rewards. I know it seems backward but that’s the secret. People confuse being subservient (forced) with willing service (out of love and gratitude), mainly because of ego. Brush that nasty guy away because that’s where the real fight is. Suddenly kindness, gentleness and peace emerge and your marriage, life and yes, even your country are transformed.

In this life we will still face and see struggles and hardships. The serenity prayer helps, do what you can and trust God for the other.

I recommend a book called “The Bait of Satan” by John Bevere. It’ll help to free you from the trap of offense. You CAN disagree with folks and keep your peace. You are not required to hate those you disagree with, in fact the Beatitudes tells us quite the opposite.

So you keep on reminding us that the United States is currently down but not out. We all need to look at our own attitudes and how we are affecting the current political climate.

What you wrote in the previous column was inspiring and true and very necessary to get us back to the perspective of what really happens instead of the myopic bubble the media wants to put us in to make a few bucks.
Secondly, I feel so sad for people who rage and verbally vomit all over others because something inside of them is so broken and so sad. I pray that they heal whether by prayer or meditation or counseling. I just can’t imagine going through life and waking up every morning and pissing in the Cheerios of all those around me. At first I felt angry and shocked that someone took time to write something so angry and hurtful and mean. But that is happening so much more now and we see it everywhere (thanks to social media which gives us the best and worst of what it can offer) which is why we need to seek out, highlight, remember and remind each other of the good. It’s the very medicine we have to receive and give in order to move through the darkness. And now as I read the comments, instead of anger I have sadness and pity for the person (and people) who have so much anger and hate. And I pray their hearts are softened and turned around and receive the freedom and hope that comes with that change. In the meantime, we have to have to keep loving and helping others. Thank you.

Second, I am constantly amazed that people feel that every column should perfectly align with their way of seeing things. I don’t find every one of Gary Larson’s comics utterly hilarious but I buy another Far Side calendar each year. I didn’t always find Lewis Grizzard’s column to be the pinnacle of comedy and commentary but it was always the first thing I read each day because he was consistently the pinnacle of comedy and commentary. There have been problems throughout the history of mankind and it has survived because of poets and artists who remind us that we take ourselves too seriously. Yes there are problems and every generation will face them, but will come out on the other side of history and life simply because they looked for something more beautiful than what is on the surface.
The media and politicians want to keep us divided and hating and closing our eyes to the beauty of each other and Creation.
The media and politicians are like Henry Penny and want us to believe the sky is falling in. But writers the artists whose medium is words, faithfully remind us there is still beauty in the world.

Maybe if “Dear Friend” doesn’t like what you have to say, he should just move on and look for something that spews hate, divisiveness, and anger – you know something that reinforces his own views.

I wonder if he feels so dismissive towards your column, why write to you? Ah, because he feels that he, too must spread hate, divisiveness, and anger – thereby fulfilling some inner need to make the world around him worse. For, you see, these people don’t try to fix all the problems, much less bring an end to what’s causing them – no, they WANT all the hate, divisiveness, and anger to continue.

To me the big question is “Why?” But, that doesn’t make me read, watch, or listen to their stuff.

I’m going to try and spread kindness and the love of Jesus. I’m going to read about kindness and the good in the world as much as I can. I know that there is bad, but I refuse to immerse myself in it – it knocks at every door of my life without my invitation anyway. I want to hear how people immerge from hardship victorious, or how they die giving it their all. I want to read the stories you have to write, Sean, for they tug at the heart, they move us to act better, they give us hope, they make us laugh and cry, and do both at the same time.

    Sean, you rock.

    Mr. Bill

    Hey Sean,
long time reader—-first time commenter—-i just HAD to comment.
    i love you Bud.
thanks for your podcast—-i REALLY need what you have to say.
is it really controversial that “America doesn’t suck”?
is this worth getting angry about and saying mean things?
i love America—-i love the land of the free and the home of the brave.
i think the answer to the question of whether America sucks or not, comes down to the individuals in America.
i think that if i really care if America sucks or not, i first need to go look in the freaking mirror and figure out first if I suck or not.
i do suck in some ways—–so, i am having to figure out what i need to change in my life so that i won’t suck so much.
if we all do that—-and we stop sucking so much individually , then we will stop sucking as a country.
there is a reason i am going to counceling, working on my marriage, trying to figure out what it takes to be a good man, to have integrity, to love people.
    i don’t want to suck.
i want to be a good man.
i want to be like Jesus.
i want my words to line up with my spirit, soul and body.
Love you Sean—-thanks for not sucking.

So sad that we blame everything on something beside ourselves. The attitude expressed in this letter to you is full of hatred and degradation. And the person doesn’t realize that it isn’t America that sucks, but each of us who throw out hatred, evil expressions toward others, and self-inflated worth. Fix the country? Rather fix yourself first… Show love, show gratitude, show pride… Do we have problems? Yep – ourselves…

    Dear Sean,

I’m relatively certain you don’t need this email, but I guess I need to send it. I hope the letter you posted did not leave a stain, sting in any way, or cause you the least grief. This country does not suck, however it is made up of a very large number of people and we all have our flaws. Those flaws cause us to get off track from time to time but we usually find our way back. I served this country for 34 years in law enforcement. I’ve seen the worst in people and I’ve seen the best. What I’ve learned is we must stay focused. I do that by praying God’s will be done and trying to stay positive. Your column helps with that.
There. I said it and feel better all ready. I wonder if the writer you posted about can say the same.

Amen, brother! Having served in law enforcement for some thirty-five years myself, plus an additional eight years in elected office, I can definitely agree with your comments. I, too, have seen the good and bad in people over those 43 years of public service, and, fortunately, have observed far and away, that the GOOD easily out-number the bad. Thank God for writers, such as Sean, who consistently point out the reason that our homeland, in spite of its many flaws, still remains the greatest country that this world has ever known!

I wanted to add another comment regarding the fact that you can respectfully disagree with someone without being hateful and using bad language and name calling which is something else many people either have not been taught or simply chose not to adhere to. Also, you clearly have not lost all of your faithful followers. Keep your head up, and don’t let the haters get to you, as hard as that is. I seem to recall that awhile back you were criticized for writing about things that are too depressing. No matter what you do, you can’t please everyone all the time.

SO easy to say, and SO hard to do for some of us (me included) to do. So, read this: “Casting all your care on Him, for He cares for you” 1 Peter 5:7. Don’t worry about someone like that! Don’t let the cranky-pants folks get to you. (I beg to ask that “lovely person” the question of “why did you read the column in the first place?”, but I digress. Yes we have our problems like any country. But there’s a positive uplifting way to work them out together rather than the ugly and lately violent ways of some who want to destroy the moral values of this country and turn their back on God. Families rooted in God and believers in democracy have made this the greatest country on earth. Why some want to destroy our Christian democracy and replace it with an immoral socialist state is beyond me. Then of course, maybe they don’t believe in God.

Will Cagle, we don’t want to destroy the dream the founders had for this country, we want it to actually flourish on all levels. May I suggest reading the ‘Treaty of Tripoli’, specifically Article 11, that clearly states “the US is in no way shape or form a ‘Christian nation’!” And the Establishment Clause of the 1A validates that!

The recent Supreme Court decision just removes the federal mandate that should not have been there anyway. It returned this right to the states where it belongs.
Why are writing your state representatives if the laws in YOUR state are restrictive rather than coming here. And, as far as not being alone in your “dissenting opinion”, you and the rest of them are definitely in the minority.

Well it sounds like another individual so blinded by hatred and loathing that the only way they can express any real emotion is through the need to try and tear down something of what makes up the very world that allows her to shoot her mouth off indiscriminately. These people lead a sad and depressive life and should be pitied. They wallow in their own world of pathetic and largely self-created unhappiness. They are the very purveyors of the hatred and discontent they say they are against; the kind that keep the crawl going across the bottom of the screen; the kind that feed the need for a 24-hour news cycle of pestilence twisted into a social and/or political agenda and fed to an ever more mindless public in 15 or 30 second sound bites; the kind that have been so beaten down by this system of cyclical control and manipulation that they no longer see – or simply choose not to see – any good, anywhere, and thus become the very thing that system feeds and creates. THEY are the very embodiment of what is wrong with this country, exuding vitriol and depravation, whereas YOU Sean represent the opposite; the true nature of this country. That true nature is evident in all those things you mention in your recent column, and more. Your words touched on the very magic that this country was founded on and continues to ride on. Ever since the founding of this nation – where each person has more or less had a say – there has been contention and division of ideals and ideas. Think everything went smoothly in the old days? When one is tempted to wax poetic about such times I would remind them of a little event referred to as The Civil War. No Sean, you are definitely not the problem here – the unfortunate writer of that hateful note is. Are we perfect? No. But you sir are the very reminder of the good and real and AMERICAN that is needed to cut through the daily dread on the screen and the radio and in the print that seeks to destroy us for profit and control…

I think most people are just trying to make a decent living, pay their mortgage/rent, feed their families, raise good kids in a bad world and ‘live and let live.’ The person that wrote that horrible letter should realize that THEY do not have to read your column and MAYBE they need something for their constipation to improve their mood and outlook on Life!

There are problems, divisions in this country yes, but we as Americans will figure it out. We always do. But in that process, please let us never forget what makes this the most desired and worthy country in the world for our ability to see the good, to never lose hope, and yes for our ability to say what we think. All of us. Do NOT quit calling our attention back to what makes the majority of the people do good things and ask nothing in return. The news today would have us believe nothing ever goes right and never will again. During Covid we all got sucked down into that abyss and some got lost in it. Hope. You give us hope Sean, never quit!

Because you use down to earth real life stories that both make you laugh and sometimes tear up. I am amazed at given how difficult your childhood was, that you are able to write such amazing uplifting stories. But I think God has chosen you for this task, to speak to everyone regardless of their race, religion or lack thereof, age, sex or politics; and to do it in a way that touched the heart. Yes there will be naysayers out there, who because of bitterness or evil in their hearts will reject you. But like you always do, turn the other cheek and move forward. God bless!

There are a lot of things wrong with this world of ours. That person is correct. But there are also a lot of things right. The beauty of God’s creation has not been lost in the ugliness of evil. I think God wants us to keep our eyes open but also to trust in His love and care for us. We have lots of work to do to bring back the world we used to know. Maybe instead of griping we should be mending the brokenness.

All I can say is “Wow”. As you made clear, there are many things in this country that stink, many things that divide us, and many things we want to change if we could (and many are working on those changes). This does not mean that our entire country stinks or that each of us shouldn’t work hard to improve those stinky parts. Most importantly, however, this doesn’t mean there aren’t innumberable great things about this country, many of which you recounted in your post. You (and many others) are not discounting nor unwilling to discuss the bad parts, because we are, but we choose to focus more on the many great things in our country, in our lives, in our families. I believe, as you may do, that focusing on the great and good things will help the bad.

If they don’t like your work, they have a choice not to read it! It seems that many people believe that if they don’t like something, no one should like it, or even have the option to read and give it consideration – the other side, so to speak. As you can see by the comments above, you have quite the fan club. Don’t let one unhappy person impact the ability of so many to continue to enjoy your musings.

I loved the column in question, and I love even more how supportive people have been in response to the critical response. The logic of the person being critical is when they write: “Nobody cares what you have to say about anything anyway.” Obviously, they cared enough to read the original column, and then cared enough to be so totally outraged that they would respond with such a blast of venom. You bring hope, and light, and light to so many — and I am one who considers myself blessed that a friend introduced me to your column. Please keep writing. Please keep speaking out. This is the FIRST time I have ever felt compelled to offer a comment on anything I’ve read on the Internet. Actually, “dear reader”, what is REALLY wrong with this country is the EXTREME incivility that is allowed to flourish via social media. I absolutely, unequivocally believe in free speech but I believe equally in the old adage with which most of us were brought up: If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. And that, “dear reader” is how polite, well-bred people say “Shut the f%^$ up.” Sean, carry on, please.

    Dear Sean,

I am a 15-year-old girl from California, an aspiring novelist who heard about your blog from my grandparents. After listening to my relatives read your stories out loud for months on end, I finally decided to do the only logical thing and sign up to receive your posts. And I’ve never regretted that decision once. If they don’t make me cry or laugh out loud, your writings never fail to make me grin. You do what I someday dream of doing; you inspire people to hope, to smile, to do good in this world. And that is the best thing anyone can do.
I have something to say about the critics, if I may. I understand where they are coming from. There seem to be a lot of people who really do think America is not a great place. They’re called pessimists, and they probably haven’t gotten much of a chance to see the bright side. They also often seem to be very caught up in politics and bad news. As for myself—I very rarely watch the news. I know nothing about politics. If I didn’t have a family around me who was aware of such things, I likely wouldn’t even know who our current president is. And because I do not choose to see the bad in this country, it gives me ample room to see the good in it. To the pessimists: have you ever knelt in front of an open second-story bedroom window, your heart beating giddy with adrenaline, watching Fourth-of-July fireworks explode over a line of treetops? Have you ever slurped a cherry limeade slushy out of a red plastic solo cup that seems about to melt with summer heat? Have you ever paid for a stranger’s meal, or opened the door for a teenager at a shopping mall, or smiled at the McDonalds drive-through worker? Have you ever even stepped foot in any church building at all?
Try it. I think it will give you a new definition of America. The America we see.
Sean, I admire you greatly—not only for bringing life to the masses, but for trying to show your readers the world I see every day—the America I love.
    I’ll never stop reading.

    Sincerely,
    MJ

What’s the one thing all Sean’s faithful reader’s know for true and certain? He knows he is not all alone. And he will never be left all alone. Column after column online, and page after page in his books testify to this awareness. I have read your column for some time now and have found comfort in your words during some difficult periods in my life. Using your baseball analogy, your first column was a line drive foul tip that hit the lady behind the home teams’ bench square in the heart; she never saw it coming. Knowing our country is all those positive things should be a given that we have as our foundation so that when we struggle, cry and strike out in pain, the rest of us will close in around to love through the darkness. You missed the point of someone losing their rights, not a religious rite, but a human right to control their own physical body regardless of what others believe. Where does it stop when this occurs? Your column today was a slow bunt down the third base side that trickled out of play. You chose the worst of the many comments from the first column and gave a response that was disappointing from a man who I have read on many occasions, “…if you haven’t heard this from anyone else, I love you.” I didn’t see your love as conditional until this column today. It felt as if you didn’t see through the anger, the fear of the writer. The same fear that you have written about several times that causes us humans to lash out at times while enduring our painful moments. This is not about access to abortion; it is about access to a person’s ability to control their lives and destiny. We cannot judge them, we can only love them, support them and perhaps that love will guide them to a better place of their choosing. It should not be legislated by man as the gift is not of man. So, Sean, for me it’s a 0 and 2 count. Maybe you swing for the fences or perhaps just get safely on base.

MD, people like you are exactly what is wrong with this country telling me to leave when all people of this country, not just women, got their 14A Constitutionally protected rights stripped away from them. You do know that what Roe v Wade was truly about, don’t you? So NO, I’m not going anywhere, instead I’m going to vote and utilize my other Constitutionally protected rights to defend those of others from domestic terrorists like you, including my 2A right. And if you have a problem with it, then I’ll see you on the other side of the battlefield with my AR in hand!

His work has appeared in Southern Living, The Tallahassee Democrat, Good Grit, South Magazine, Alabama Living, the Birmingham News, Thom Magazine, The Mobile Press Register, and he has authored seven books.” So yeah, we came to follow him honestly just like you did! But your biggest mistake is presuming I’m a “liberal or leftist”, because I assure you I’m not and I’ll use my 2A rights for what they were intended for, protecting all the other rights of my fellow man/woman from domestic terrorists like you! So before you assume you’ll “be on the side with all the guns”, I’m here to tell that many like me will be on the other side with our guns!

I believe that The United States of America is the best place on this earth to live and that is why people are willing to risk their lives to come here. It is not a perfect place, but, it is an incredible life. If you think your life stinks, decide that you want to make it better and get busy making changes. Change starts with the individual as that is the only one you have control over. Look at the person in the mirror and get busy. I have done this my whole life and it works!

For those who are arguing their case against the recent abortion decision by the Supreme Court, let me quickly point out that these men and women of the court are Constitutional scholars. They were appointed to the court legally and their decisions are binding whether you agree with them or not. Over many many years of court decisions, you’ll find people on both sides of the debate. And that’s ok. But whileb both sides have the right constitutionally to agree or disagree, it’s not right to threaten violence against anyone for their viewpoint. You have the right to work through the system to try and get things changed. But spewing venomous words against others who disagree with you is not only a bad choice but certainly not a civil approach to debate. By the way, I keep a pocket size copy of the constitution with me, so I don’t need a lecture on it’s content

How sad…if not a little frightening…that you would get an expletive riddled comment condemning your writing about the HEART of America. Self-righteous argument is not a passionate yearning to make a difference or solve a problem. It is the problem. Our passion is better spent on appreciating what we have (no matter how little it is,) devoting ourselves to sharing (teaching) the possibilities, and devoting our energy and hearts to each other. That is not a ‘you vs me’ mindset…it is a belief in us, ALL of us, working together. And that is the vision you share – an America filled with possibility, a population of generous and kind citizens who care deeply. And you have the gift and the courage to keep the dream alive. Thank you for your willingness to share your words…thank you, Sean, for your leadership.

Yes, things get ugly here from time to time. My late husband was the EPE of the Winston-Salem Journal – but even before we started our life together I was a “news junkie” – with an avid interest in national & international news. So I know pretty much what’s going on everywhere. There have been terrible tragedies in our family, including some that you’ve known-but if I still can’t see good around me I might as well give up as your angry letter writer has. “haters going to hate” someone in Hollywood said. Well, I just read your Mendon article, and you are a GREAT writer, I happen to have about 40 years of voracious reading experience, so, I believe I have the benefit of decades of information to use as the benchmark for what okay, and what’s great.

Dear Sean…don’t listen to those who put you down because you try to be positive in this mixed up world right now. It’s people like you who keeps us going when we look for the positive in the world. Keep on with the writing. I appreciate you!!

Someone is having a bad day (or maybe life). Too bad they choose to focus on the half empty part of this country/life/etc. Hang in there Sean! Keep up the “Good Work”!!
