Thanksgiving

When I lost my job, you were there. When I wrote my first book, you were there. When I lost my thirteen-year-old bloodhound. When I accidentally walked into an elderly woman’s hotel room to find her half naked.

Thanksgiving Eve, and I am writing you. I know you’re probably with family. Maybe Granny is with you. I don’t want to interrupt.

I only wish you knew how much you’ve changed my life. I don’t know if I’ve ever told you that.

You see, I’ve been writing to you for four years. Just about every day. It’s one of the longest gigs I’ve ever had.

It started as a whim, now it’s life.

I’ve written from all sorts of places. The mountains of North Carolina, the hills of Arkansas, the Texas plains, the Arizona red rocks, the Rockies, beer joints in South Alabama.

You might not know this, but when I started this column—if you call it that—I didn’t like myself too much. And I didn’t like the pathetic jobs I worked.

I worked swinging hammers, running power drills, playing music in beer joints, and in Baptist churches. And I was tired.

But that changed the day I met you. And you can tell Granny I said that—in case she‘s reading over your shoulder.

I remember the exact day I decided to write you. I was laying tile in an old man’s house. A thought shot through my brain. It was a flash, but sometimes flashes mean things.

I thought: “What if I write a blog? Yeah, I could do that.”

Usually, these ideas enter in one ear and slide out the other. But that day I got excited about it. I went home and wrote a 250-word column. To you.

And that’s when we met.

You became everything to me. From then on, wherever I traveled, I thought of you.

I wondered which sorts of things you might care about, what kind of day you were having, whether you needed to laugh. So I tried. I tried to make you smile. I fail a lot. But I try.

I wondered if you ever felt alone, like I do. I wondered if you ever felt rejected, like I did. I wondered if you had ever lost somebody.

And after a year of writing, something happened.

People started emerging from the mosaic of life. They’d always been there, but I hadn’t seen them before. I was too selfish, and a little too blind to see them.

They were you. Good people. Strong people. Kids with cancer. Champions with cerebral palsy. Children with Down syndrome who know more about love than I ever will.

So I wrote about you. I wrote about grieving widows, the abused, and the cashier at Piggly Wiggly. Little Leaguers who were missing limbs. Dog enthusiasts. Bar musicians, prison baptisms, dying fishermen, potlucks, elderly people, Alabamians, Tennesseans, and one North Dakotan.

I didn’t even know North Dakota was real.

You became family. And you have been there for me whenever I needed you.

When I lost my job, you were there. When I wrote my first book, you were there. When I lost my thirteen-year-old bloodhound. When I accidentally walked into an elderly woman’s hotel room to find her half naked.

You are the reason I write about my father’s suicide—something I had never even spoken about before you came along.

And you wrote back to me. You were the kid who wrote me about your mother, dying in a car accident. You were the Methodist preacher who told me you were an alcoholic. The pregnant teenager.

You were with me when I visited my father’s grave after twenty-five years of nearly hating him.

You were kind. You told me I had talent, even though I didn’t believe you. You were Connie Baggett, Edna B., Jack Darnell, Tiffany Dumas, April Boone, Sarah Jane Foster, Peter Wong, Katie Huelsbeck, Tonye Frith, Dave Galloway, Lyle Sandquist. There are too many names to list.

You are the reason I’m writing this.

Right now, I envision you with family seated around a big table. Maybe you’re reading this on your phone before supper. So I’ll make this fast:

I wish I were there. I wish I could reach through this screen and hug you so hard your bones would creak.

But I can’t do that. All I can do is tell you how thankful I am for you. You turned a hopeless kid into a hopeful man. One day, when will meet on that Beautiful Shore, I will find you, hug your neck, and thank you for what you’ve done for me.

Eat a lot of food today. I love you.

Tell Granny I love her, too.

Happy Thanksgiving, 2018.

I’ll be back in Lower Alabama for a few days around Christmas but I felt my bones creak when you literarily (versus literally) hugged me. Thank you for what you do. Happy Thanksgiving to the man whose blog is one of the only ones I look forward to reading every day.

By the way, I’m a grammar nazi and an avid proof-reader of my husband’s writing, so I couldn’t help but notice and point out to you your mistake: “One day, when will meet on that Beautiful Shore…” (I hope it doesn’t offend you, but I would want to know if I had written it.)

Anyway, I love you. See you in the next blog post.

Happy Thanksgiving to you, too, you sweet man. I’m so grateful you got that epiphany about writing a blog, because your words have reached and touched sooooo many people. In a divisive society like the one we’re living in right now, your words matter more than ever. Your viewpoint and your gratitude matter. Matter of fact, your column should be required reading in the hallowed halls of our government so our politicians could have a better grasp and appreciation of the people they’re supposed to be serving. Your words are a blessing… YOU are a blessing. And don’t you ever forget it!

Happy Thanksgiving Sean. I love your post today. I started blogging eleven years ago shortly after my hubby passed on. It became a comfort for me and I’ve met a lot of really awesome folks. I am so glad that you began blogging. The first thing I do when I sit down with my morning coffee is to read your post. It’s such an uplifting way to start my days.

Today I will celebrate with my little dog Pogo. My family and friends are scattered, but we are all close through our phones and blogs. Pogo and I want to wish you and Jamie, and Thelma Lou and Otis a most wonderful Thanksgiving Day. Pogo sends special woofs to the doggies. We love you, hugs, Edna B.

My mother died the Friday of Labor Day weekend 2 years ago. My Daddy had died 3 years previously after a courageous battle with cancer. I knew how important flowers were when you leave their graves that first time. I wanted to leave flowers to cover my mother’s raw grave after her burial on Labor Day. The problem was that all the florists were closed for the holiday. One local florist offered to make what I wanted for an highly exorbitant fee that I simply could not pay. I posted on FB a plea for someone to help me find some pink roses for mother’s grave. An old friend was sitting at the Auburn game and she reached out to me offering that her husband, a florist, would help me. We spoke later and he personally delivered exactly what I wanted to the funeral. Later he and I became FB friends and he shared your stories from his feed. I began reading your stories and found them to be so comforting – like a balm to my wounds. You have blessed me and I have shared you with others. Thank you for being real and so open. Thank you for seeing and pointing out the beautiful. I hope you eat a lot of turkey and fixins’ …and don’t stop writing. I believe it helps you, but it helps others like me so much more.

    Hi Sean.
We cooked a big meal at my church today. We had about 40 people come and bring the sides and dessert. We had Eucharist first because that what we Episcopalians do. We ate, had a little tea or wine, sang a couple songs and took home food for later. We had 2 homeless ladies come and they took lots of food with them. It was a good day.
Now we mhome lyong on the couch resting up before I tackle picking the bones of those 3 birds toI make turkey soup and hoping I hear from my three kids. Hope the rest of you day went well.

I’m thankful for lots of things today and one of them is a bearded red headed guy who makes me smile every day. Love Dottie

Sean…like you I am a writer of sorts, sure I self-published a couple of books, even have them on Amazon. Lot of good that does? I don’t pay a publisher to hawk my stuff, I can’t afford to spend money promoting my books. Most of the books that sold I gave away to friends. I had no hope of getting on any best seller list. I read your story daily and they hit a spot each day, some good some I would rather not remember. Like loosing my wife of 23 years or our Schnauzer at age 15!
Today as I ate Thanksgiving alone I am thankful for so much, not the least of which is a red headed writer from Alabama. Thanks for lifting my spirits.

    Hey Sean;
Granny isn’t here. She’s gone now, and mom. I’m the Granddad now. I’m watching the Saints, and they’re winning, so that is good. Had turkey and dressing and all the rest, and then S’mores on the patio. My own children and grandchildren live far away, and I lost my first wife after 44 years. Miss her still. But I met another wonderful woman and she led me to Christ. Baptized for the first time at age 70. Today my wife’s daughter and her husband and their 15 year old daughter were my family, as they have been since we married ten years ago. I asked them to each share three things they were thankful for. Worked out well. Family was high on everybody’s list.
You are a friend. You were introduced to me by a friend who reads your vastly important essays about the glorification of love, friendship, caring, and humility. You are an extremely valuable person. You are reaching so many hearts, and Boy, do we need that! Never stop believing in yourself.
My three things were the church, my wife who led me to it, and my family, both the new one and the old one. But you were on the list….

Sean, you make every day a day of Thanksgiving with your words, as you share the beauty and blessings that God has given us. You show us the riches that money can not buy! You are a blessing that slows our busy lives down to feel the peace all around us! May you be blessed as we look forward to many years of your writing!!

Sean I just recently found your blog and it has added to my husband and my life. In this crazy world you shine a light onto important things and people in our lives that we might have gotten to busy to pay attention to. We are busy but you remind us to stop and smell the roses. Ok, maybe it’s not roses but the sweat from my three grandsons football jerseys after practice. And we are so lucky to have that experience.

You are talented and you make a difference – our family has experienced multiple suicides- my wife is battling Pancreatic cancer – my daughter battles Cystic Fibrosis every day- and to your chagrin, we live in Auburn
But you continue to help me understand that life is beautiful even when found in the supposed ordinary
Thank you for believing in yourself enough to share your talent with us
And – if I have any advice – listen to Jason Isbell’s lyrics – there is magic there-

Have you ever felt lonely in the midst of a Thanksgiving gathering. This year I did! Like a square peg. Just did not fit! Maybe it’s because of the hurricane or simply a long time feeling of being different. Uncomfortable around folks. Sometimes I really like being alone where God and I can just commune about the beauty of my backyard and the stress of living up to my expectations stops. Can’t wait for the ?!

Sean, I just started following your column because of a friend of mine kept sending me your posts and I just loved them. I am not someone that “follows people” never followed TV or movie stars….still don’t know the names of stars. I grew up in an orphanage and then in foster homes….went into the military, college (became an Engineer) , have been married to a wonderful man for over 30 years and have two wonderful rescue dogs that make our life complete. Your posts speak to me in many ways. Thank you for that. I love reading them first thing in the morning. They bring a sense of balance and thoughtfulness to my world.

Hey Sean, November 24th and I’ve just read your Thanksgiving and I wanted to let you know the reason I’m late is because I took my family on a destination Thanksgiving to a little German town in Texas called Fredericksburg. It is only 10,000 people until after Thanksgiving and then it swells to 30,000. We stayed in an beautiful white house with a porch on it. My husband and I had both of our boys and a girl friend. It was all good and I had prepared everything in advance so I didn’t even have to take a nap after the meal. I totally get what you were saying even though I’m not a blogger I’m a preacher/teacher and the people God has sent me to and sent to me have shaped my life. I’ll be focusing on hope and joy in the next Christian season which is Advent. I tend to send your stuff to people that I know would appreacite and get it. I’ve even used your story in a sermon but gave you fully credit. I said, “My friend, Sean once said. . . ” You are a friend and I look forward to hearing more from you.

Hi Sean – as I write this, its snowing outside and gray. Long about now, I start daydreaming about our annual trip to LA, Enterprise to be exact. This is the 16th or 17th year I’ve been invited down to hang with my in-laws (the Carters) for Christmas. I married into this fine family about that long ago, but I’ve known them even longer. The Carters are an amazing bunch – hard working, talented and so willing to give. David (known as Papa to my son Cole, 12) worked for nearly 30 years as a teacher and high school principal in Enterprise. Rosemary, also for 30 years as a teacher and librarian. She also plays the organ and piano at the small Presbyterian church (for about 40 years). My wife Rachel, is an actress, yoga instructor, ocupational therapist and amazing mother. Her brother Chris is a musician, writer and office manager in his wife Susan’s audioligist practice in Huntsville. So, we drive 1000 miles down every year around the 23rd or so and meet up in the Carters modest ranch house for more love and good food than you could imagine. Actually, having gotten the opportunity to get to know you over the last couple years – you can well imagine. So, the main reason I write is that I want to share this family with you so that you can know us a little better. My mother in law Rosemary introduced your writing to me and now my norther family all reads your daily missives. When we get together (usually for food), often we share the latest story and sometimes my father will read one out loud. I know you’re a busy fellow, but if you have a moment – can we have you over for dinner in Enterprise some time between Christmas and New Years? Or, we could meet in Dothan (we LOVE Hunts for the great oysters). So many good restaurants in E-prise. Did I mention that my mom is from Bellwood? And many, many more relatives. You do good work Sean. You bring joy and heart and warmth to our lives – it would be an honor to meet you. Please consider it, thank you, Mike

Hey Sean, Just catching up after being on a short vacation to Tennessee with my little family of three and my parents. I just wanted you to know that if you were here I would hug you too. I don’t think you realize how much your “blog” means to us all. I feel like you are there with me, feeling the things I feel, dealing with the problems, and rejoicing in the miracles. So I just wanted to say THANKS! Thanks for being the person willing to look past the short comings of human nature and looking into the real heart of a person. Love ya Quinn!

Hello my friend Sean! When I was 10 years old, my Mama and 2 older brothers left on a Sunday morning to visit my Papaw in Castor, Louisiana. All our family gathered there every 4th Sunday in the month. Aunt’s, Uncle’s, cousins in the country. We would go to the little country Baptist church and sing the old time gospel hymes. Eat some good country cooking and go fishing for tadpoles. We had fun.On this day it changed me forever. When we arrived home in a small town in Texas just across the Louisiana line, I was the first one in the house to find my Daddy with a gun shot wound to his head. This was 1967. I struggled with servere anxiety and depression but made it through. June 7, 2010 I got the phone call my middle brother (my best friend) had committed suicide with a shotgun. My world fell apart. I was diagnosed with servere PTSD. I never gave up to find the help I needed. I have been married to my first love since 1977. Together we have withstood the storms of life. They may bend us but not break us. I am retiring February 1st. When I grow up I want to write a blog just like you. You always make me smile. I show my 15 year old Grandson your funny posts, I love to hear him laugh when he reads them. Everyone of all ages can relate to you.I hope to meet you one day. BTW….I am a recovering Baptist.

    With Love,

    Kathleen

Happy Thanksgiving to you and Jamie, and the furry kids. I saw this post was from last year, and that made me smile. Because that means this year, you are taking time out for yourself and your family. I never really put it together completely, how much you had changed since you had started your blog. But those changes are tremendous, and I am thankful for them, and for you.
Everyone right now is talking about the new Mr Rogers movie. As well they should. We need more Fred Rogerses. And while we’re at it, more Tom Hankses. And we need so much to have you, exactly as you are, pointing out the beauty, the worthwhile priorities, and the stories of the people you take the time to find out about.
I understand what you say sometimes about not knowing what your big purpose is. When I had to quit working, I questioned that, too. Heck, I questioned it a lot even when I worked full time. I knew God had a plan for my life, but I never married or reared anyone, and my career was never anything high-powered. But maybe His Plan involves millions of little things, noticed and done well. You are fulfilling that, for sure. Keep going!
