Sean of the South Column is Moving

FOR A LONG TIME NOW, people have been sending me emails daily about not receiving my columns via email. This happens even though these people have subscribed, confirmed their email subscriptions, fasted for at least three days, and offered up a ritual blood sacrifice.

Other readers will say that sometimes they receive the column, and other times they don’t. It’s hit or miss.

If any of this has been happening to you, you’re not alone. Please know, this problem is not you. In fact, the problem isn’t me, either. It’s El Niño.

Actually, the problem is a computer software glitch that nobody can seem to figure out. And believe me, I’ve spent hours of my life on the phone with technical support, being placed on hold, listening to smooth jazz muzak, trying to figure this issue out. Many of my recent gray hairs come from this.

So as a result, we’re trying out a different email platform to send out the daily column now. The email service is called Substack. We’ll see how it goes. Who knows, the new software might suck—in which case, we’ll just go back to the other sucky software.

But don’t worry, you don’t have to do anything or make any changes to your email. We’ve transferred your address to the new service. The only thing you might have to do is make sure these posts don’t appear in your spam folder. However, if the column is not coming to your inbox, you might have to visit my site and resubscribe (Click Here). If this is the case, I’m sorry.

Lastly—I want to stress—this column is COMPLETELY FREE. This column will always be free until I kick the oxygen habit. The reason I mention this is because many other writers (better writers than me) use Substack, and many of these high-brow writers charge for their work. I do not charge. I will not charge. And that is a promise. So bear with us as we sort this email thing out.

Okay. That is all.

Love,
—Sean Dietrich

Thanks for the info, Sean. Technology is wonderful, when it works! I don’t believe I have missed any of your emails. Save them every day and put them in a folder to read later. Love the way you write and your subject matter. I might laugh or cry, but there is always an emotion. Keep up the good work.

So glad you have a solution. It is working beautifully for me. I previously cheated by reading you on Facebook when the emails didn’t come in. I guess that was selfish, but I assumed the problem was with my email carrier. Welcome back!

About a week ago I started getting them all twice in the same email. I don’t mind as long as they come. You know these apps are apt not to work right. And as for paying, we used to have to buy a magazine to get regular writing from southern authors. And I would do so again, gladly.

Thanks, Sean, for the update. I haven’t missed more than a day or two of your columns. However, the recent change in format that includes the artwork is somewhat frustrating. I forward your column to probably over fifty friends. Deleting the ‘unsubscribe’ information at the bottom is always a problem, for some reason. I prefer the old format, but will continue as usual. I got hooked on your writing with the book about sheriff Brown . . .

Hi Sean, I not only love your column, I use it to let friends know that I am still alive. I am not worried about being dead myself, I have two special needs dogs in my life that I worry will not get the care they need if I am not around most of the time.

BTW, I LOVE your new logo. It kicks things up a notch. Many thanks from this godless heathen.

Keep up the good work – LOVE the column. I am getting it twice, at the moment, one in the old format and again with the drawings on it. I thought it might because (1) I have subscribed to receive it and (2) we are subscribers to The Lede/B’ham News – since they are no longer being printed, thought that might be why the 2. Anyway, would rather receive 2 than NONE!😳

Have tried and tried to figure out what happened. If I go to Substack and try to resubscribe, it tells me I’m already a subscriber. Just can’t get the emails. I am so grateful for your final paragraph. THE main reason I have not moved my blog from WordPress to Substack is the annoying “this is the free version, but if you want to read the good stuff, pay me money” messages from other Substack authors. So thank you for feeding your oxygen habit for our benefit. Looking forward…

What this really means is that you’re getting more popular & the server can’t keep up. God Bless You. Thanks for your diligence in trying to solve this.

My iPad periodically decides some of the emails I get every day are spam, and I find them in the junk file. Conversely, iPad will allow through every email offering to enlarge body parts I don’t have, claiming to be holding shipments I didn’t order, that I’ve won contests I didn’t enter, and other obvious spam. Perhaps part of the problem is simply email itself.

Dear Sean, I’ve had a pretty crummy 10 months. This past May my husband was diagnosed with Stage four Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He tried his best, and they did cure the non-Hodgkins lymphoma, but underlying it was a bad type of leukemia, so he passed in February a big shock always, but I was kind of expecting it to happen. Two weeks before he died I had missed my mammogram the previous summer cause I was with him at the hospital in Texas, so I got my mammogram while I was there in Texas with him. They called me back and said I had a suspicious mammogram so with diagnostic exam they told me I had cancer of the breast. I’m getting ready to leave this Sunday to fly back to the hospital (i’m from South Carolina) to have my surgery. My sister is going to meet me there and be my one plus. They tell me everything looks good. I got it early so they expect a full recovery. I’m praying That’s what happens. I just wanted to say I loved your book about the sheriff in Alabama . I can’t remember right now the amazing someone brown that’s how I heard of you, I still go to my local library . I was very pleased to find you online and I have been watching for and reading your blogs. Almost every day I cry after reading them because they’re so poignant. Wish me well for my surgery if you would. Thank you for everything you do, and write.

Ok Pone. Good job. No problems with Substack. But since everybody missed their big cry today, I recommend that the ones that haven’t heard of it look up the Teddy Stoddard Story on Google or YTube. I know you know it. But for those that don’t, it’ll give em their daily fix. Great story. I’m thinking it’s true too. Still want to hear the details on that single wide Xmas party and whether the home owners insurance covered it!

    Feliz Navidad!

Bless your little heart!! And, I really do mean, bless your little heart!! Believe me! I feel your pain!! It seems as though that I have spent years of my life on the phone with technical helpers. I have a hearing problem, so that doesn’t help matters. A hearing problem coupled with my other problems of not being able to comprehend any language other than English and being extremely handicapped when it comes to technology……well I just might as well forget it. All of that is why I say from the bottom of mine, “Bless your little heart,” and a great big “THANK YOU!” I just couldn’t get along without your daily column.

Sean, you are an inspiration to aspiring writers everywhere. Many are so talented yet afraid of rejection and then they read your articles, your story, the stories of your readers. I connect with your writing because I served as a pastor in Walton County while attending Baptist College of FL in Graceville until my wife and I packed up and headed to seminary. I celebrated my 50th birthday there. I left seminary in New Orleans, disillusioned and conflicted about Baptist life, and found myself preaching, coaching and teaching after we moved to Enterprise, Daleville and Ozark before moving to Ocala. By the time we retired to Newnan, Georgia, our five grandchildren became our motivation to travel and entertain them. They became my inspiration to author southern stories when not traveling. I found ministering to and being ministered by other authors became my ministry of sorts. I find it curious Jesus never left any writings but inspired others to write best sellers sharing his stories. In 2018, Hometown Novel Writers Association, Inc., Newnan, GA began with a rag-tag gang of local authors with one mission: introduce local authors to local audiences south of Atlanta. As of 2023, Hometown Novel Writers Association offers writer workshops, critique groups, author programs, and a book fair. And, we do so on a shoestring budget because there are too many greedy charlatans feeding on the hopes and dreams of aspiring writers. When you come back to Newnan again, I missed meeting you during the Southern Lit Fest last summer, I hope to meet you. I know a lot of folks who would like to chat a while with you. Mike

I spent an hour on the phone last night with Raffy at Microsoft Support, somewhere far, far away. Years ago, I got my hearing aids to “pair” with my iPhone, and the angels sang. I thought I would once again try to pair them with my HP laptop. But not even Raffy and Microsoft could fix HP. So, Sean, if I was you, I’d blame HP. Their steak sauce is okay, but their computers won’t hunt. BTW, I always get your emails, but then, I have three email addresses because I am anal. Hope you kill it in Nashville.
