FOR A LONG TIME NOW, people have been sending me emails daily about not receiving my columns via email. This happens even though these people have subscribed, confirmed their email subscriptions, fasted for at least three days, and offered up a ritual blood sacrifice.
Other readers will say that sometimes they receive the column, and other times they don’t. It’s hit or miss.
If any of this has been happening to you, you’re not alone. Please know, this problem is not you. In fact, the problem isn’t me, either. It’s El Niño.
Actually, the problem is a computer software glitch that nobody can seem to figure out. And believe me, I’ve spent hours of my life on the phone with technical support, being placed on hold, listening to smooth jazz muzak, trying to figure this issue out. Many of my recent gray hairs come from this.
So as a result, we’re trying out a different email platform to send out the daily column now. The email service is called Substack. We’ll see how it goes. Who knows, the new software might suck—in which case, we’ll just go back to the other sucky software.
But don’t worry, you don’t have to do anything or make any changes to your email. We’ve transferred your address to the new service. The only thing you might have to do is make sure these posts don’t appear in your spam folder. However, if the column is not coming to your inbox, you might have to visit my site and resubscribe (Click Here). If this is the case, I’m sorry.
Lastly—I want to stress—this column is COMPLETELY FREE. This column will always be free until I kick the oxygen habit. The reason I mention this is because many other writers (better writers than me) use Substack, and many of these high-brow writers charge for their work. I do not charge. I will not charge. And that is a promise. So bear with us as we sort this email thing out.
Okay. That is all.
Angela - March 10, 2023 8:37 pm
I get mine every day, like clockwork! Lately, I have been getting it twice, in different formats. Thank you for continuing to freely share your thoughts and humor with us!
Erika Putnam,DC - March 10, 2023 8:37 pm
Yea! I’m so glad you mentioned this platform. I’ve been wanting to check it out. I enjoy your writing even if you do use that old typewriter. Thank you for the freeness!
Judy OBar' - March 10, 2023 8:38 pm
Thanks for the info, Sean. Technology is wonderful, when it works! I don’t believe I have missed any of your emails. Save them every day and put them in a folder to read later. Love the way you write and your subject matter. I might laugh or cry, but there is always an emotion. Keep up the good work.
Sheri K - March 10, 2023 8:39 pm
We’ll follow you anywhere! Thanks for worrying about us and doing all that work for us! We love you!!
George Bailey - March 10, 2023 8:40 pm
Thanks for the heads up. I always enjoy your daily column and share it with a number of friends.
Mary Coley - March 10, 2023 8:40 pm
No problems here….so far. Love your writing. Love your pictures on fb. Love your sweet wife.
Betty F. - March 10, 2023 8:40 pm
So glad you have a solution. It is working beautifully for me. I previously cheated by reading you on Facebook when the emails didn’t come in. I guess that was selfish, but I assumed the problem was with my email carrier. Welcome back!
Rhonda - March 10, 2023 8:40 pm
About a week ago I started getting them all twice in the same email. I don’t mind as long as they come. You know these apps are apt not to work right. And as for paying, we used to have to buy a magazine to get regular writing from southern authors. And I would do so again, gladly.
Bob Wasson - March 10, 2023 8:42 pm
Thanks, Sean, for the update. I haven’t missed more than a day or two of your columns. However, the recent change in format that includes the artwork is somewhat frustrating. I forward your column to probably over fifty friends. Deleting the ‘unsubscribe’ information at the bottom is always a problem, for some reason. I prefer the old format, but will continue as usual. I got hooked on your writing with the book about sheriff Brown . . .
Larry McEntire - March 10, 2023 8:43 pm
Hang in there! You make a difference in this world and in my life, daily. God bless you.
Beth Kinstler - March 10, 2023 8:44 pm
Hi Sean, I not only love your column, I use it to let friends know that I am still alive. I am not worried about being dead myself, I have two special needs dogs in my life that I worry will not get the care they need if I am not around most of the time.
BTW, I LOVE your new logo. It kicks things up a notch. Many thanks from this godless heathen.
Robyn - March 10, 2023 8:45 pm

Even have been problems with my phone, along with others. Solar flares have been very active for the past couple of months; it’s been said this can cause poor phone reception all over. Haven’t a clue about email. BTW, NICE LEGS, Sean. 🔥Great pic. 🤗
Dick Currey - March 10, 2023 8:47 pm
Heck, I think you worth at least twice the price you are charging.

I love you and your humor. I am one who was not getting your blog for sevearl days. Before going into deep withdrawals, I resubscribed and stalked you on the internet. Can’t go a day without being lifted up by your compassion, insight, and humor!

Thank you, SeanDietrich, for allowing me to read your column by way of my email.
One of the highlights of this old guy’s days is the enjoyment of reading what you have to share.
I appreciate you, and your works.
Terri Lynn Gobble - March 10, 2023 8:55 pm
Thank you. Love your column and have had no problem getting it. I start my day with it. Thank you!
Jimpa - March 10, 2023 8:55 pm
There does seem to be fewer comments in the new format. Don’t understand why that is…
Shari - March 10, 2023 8:56 pm
Sean…..I get it everyday and have for a few years. I’d be sad if I did not. Thank-you for sharing daily. Shari
peggie - March 10, 2023 8:59 pm
Thank you Sean. I am one of those with a hit and a miss, and sometimes junk box/spam.. Been reading your columns for quite some time every morning until the missing started. I so enjoy your writing and actually forward it to 8-10 people. Thanks and so hope this change works.
Love to you and Jamie and ‘family’.

Thank y’all (cause we know behind every great man…) so much! I’m one of those that somehow get double emails from you-LOL! No complaints from me! Sending Texas-size (((hugs)))
Ronald Howard - March 10, 2023 9:00 pm
Never been to substack before, but if you’re there then I’m there!
Debra Hickey - March 10, 2023 9:01 pm
Thank you for the update! I am new to your emails after having read ‘The Incredible Winston Browne.’ The best book I have read in a very long time!!!!!! Actually I listened to it via Audible and am so thankful I did. I am usually hesitant when learning that the author is also the narrator but your narration was amazing!!!!!
I have been getting your emails sporadically but figured they weren’t a daily occurrence. I am enjoying them and look forward to receiving them more regularly through Substack…I hope it works well for you!!!!!!
Sallie Snyder - March 10, 2023 9:03 pm
We’re in no matter how it comes to us. Love you right back! ❤️❤️❤️❣️
Dale Kyle Head - March 10, 2023 9:05 pm
Keep up the good work – LOVE the column. I am getting it twice, at the moment, one in the old format and again with the drawings on it. I thought it might because (1) I have subscribed to receive it and (2) we are subscribers to The Lede/B’ham News – since they are no longer being printed, thought that might be why the 2. Anyway, would rather receive 2 than NONE!😳
Shirley Barbaree - March 10, 2023 9:06 pm
Thanks for the heads up. Blessings to you and Jamie! 💕
Ann - March 10, 2023 9:07 pm
I had that problem and re-subscribed and got it back. Thanks!!!
Joe Graham - March 10, 2023 9:07 pm
Sean, When will you begin with the NEW sucky software?
Victoria Smith - March 10, 2023 9:08 pm
Oh Sean. I subscribed last year to a number of Substack writers and received their blog posts for months until one day I simply no longer received ANY of them. Have tried and tried to figure out what happened. If I go to Substack and try to resubscribe, it tells me I’m already a subscriber. Just can’t get the emails. I’ll see if I get yours, but I’m guessing it will be a big NO. :-/
Victoria Smith - March 10, 2023 9:10 pm
*Have had no problems receiving any of your previous columns by email.
pastorsings - March 10, 2023 9:09 pm
I am so grateful for your final paragraph. THE main reason I have not moved my blog from WordPress to Substack is the annoying “this is the free version, but if you want to read the good stuff, pay me money” messages from other Substack authors. So thank you for feeding your oxygen habit for our benefit. Looking forward…
charles Farrell - March 10, 2023 9:10 pm

I got their emails! 😉 Twice in the last week I got your letters twice. Duplicates. I just deleted the extra, no harm no foul.
Good luck to you. I get a couple of other writers on Substack and haven’t had any problems.

Michelle Stewart Walsh - March 10, 2023 9:33 pm
Pat - March 10, 2023 9:33 pm
Freebie edit for a freebie column: “…better than I” not “better than me.” Question? Finish it out – “…better than I [am].”
Susie - March 12, 2023 12:47 pm
Pat, you are correct on that one. Yes, the crutch/test is to finish that sentence out…. “better than I am”, because you would not say “better than me am”. 👍👍. Sean, I remember “my old man” taught/worked with me on that one, so Pat and I will share that one with you. Lol. Gotta love our dad’s. ❤️
Erica - March 10, 2023 9:37 pm
No worries, Sean. We’ll follow you anywhere! You’re the breath of fresh air and the touch of reality we need. It’s a privilege to “see” people as you see them … By the way, I’m pretty lucky cuz recently I’ve been getting each email TWICE a day 😉! God bless you!

Thanks Sean! No worries, appreciate the update. I’m getting it just fine on my iPhone, but receiving two different versions on my older MacBook, one with comments and one without that comes in a very strange font. I don’t mind, either way, just thought it might be helpful for your tech team.

I’m an online/internet/technology idiot, so since I figgered out how to do the Susbtack thingy (at least so far!), I think most of you loyal and avid Sean of the South readers can do it too. Hang in there!

I was getting your emails twice a day!

Thanks, Sean. I’ll follow you no matter what. I am a displaced Southerner now living in Washington state, and I know every person that you write about.
Eileen - March 10, 2023 11:35 pm
Thanks Sean. I thought I was banned for some reason. I have missed your column for over a week now. But I don’t get to read them every day and often save them up and do a Sean of the South marathon!
Hope to keep receiving them now. Was happy to see this one turn up today💞
MissusMux - March 10, 2023 11:36 pm
After five years of reading and saving each column, I missed a few days. I practically had to breathe into a paper bag. I thought I must’ve hit unsubscribe accidentally. So I subscribed again. Appreciate you and for the explanation! As one commenter says “need my daily dose of Sean!” Many thanks!! Wish I could be at the Grand Ol Opry and apres party! It will be phenomenal.

Steve Winfield (lifer) - March 11, 2023 12:34 am
WELL SEAN… I’ve had a glitch here & there but if the email is missing I can find your post on Facebook.
What this really means is that you’re getting more popular & the server can’t keep up. God Bless You. Thanks for your diligence in trying to solve this.
I’LL FIND YOU. ONE WAY OR ANOTHER!!
Linda Howington - March 11, 2023 12:38 am
My iPad periodically decides some of the emails I get every day are spam, and I find them in the junk file. Conversely, iPad will allow through every email offering to enlarge body parts I don’t have, claiming to be holding shipments I didn’t order, that I’ve won contests I didn’t enter, and other obvious spam. Perhaps part of the problem is simply email itself.
Kathy - March 11, 2023 12:41 am
Trust me, I’d pay for your daily dose of inspiration. One of your posts came in on Substack already. Received a few twice! See you at the Grand Old Opry…
Susie - March 12, 2023 12:55 pm
Kathy, don’t give him any ideas. He’s already said he’ll never charge! I’m gonna hold him to it. Lol

This new format is really hard on the old eyes. Small print is the bane of old age.
Barbara Parker - March 11, 2023 1:56 am
I’m now receiving it twice. And it’s not the same column twice. One is for the day before. Do I get one twice. Please make sure you have my email address only once. Thank you.
Karen Snyder - March 11, 2023 2:03 am
I wasn’t having any problems, but dutifully resubscribed when asked. This is, I think, my first comment since doing that, so we’ll see if my little avatar shows up. I cannot balance a keyboard on my lap and type, let alone a typewriter! Another impressive talent that you’ve apparently kept hidden. 😉 Thanks for the extra efforts to keep things running smoothly and on schedule for us.

Dear Sean, I’ve had a pretty crummy 10 months. This past May my husband was diagnosed with Stage four Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He tried his best, and they did cure the non-Hodgkins lymphoma, but underlying it was a bad type of leukemia, so he passed in February a big shock always, but I was kind of expecting it to happen. Two weeks before he died I had missed my mammogram the previous summer cause I was with him at the hospital in Texas, so I got my mammogram while I was there in Texas with him. They called me back and said I had a suspicious mammogram so with diagnostic exam they told me I had cancer of the breast. I’m getting ready to leave this Sunday to fly back to the hospital (i’m from South Carolina) to have my surgery. My sister is going to meet me there and be my one plus. They tell me everything looks good. I got it early so they expect a full recovery. I’m praying That’s what happens. I just wanted to say I loved your book about the sheriff in Alabama . I can’t remember right now the amazing someone brown that’s how I heard of you, I still go to my local library . I was very pleased to find you online and I have been watching for and reading your blogs. Almost every day I cry after reading them because they’re so poignant. Wish me well for my surgery if you would. Thank you for everything you do, and write.
Susie - March 12, 2023 12:58 pm
Good luck, Kathy!! Love to your sister for helping out!!

Always enjoy seeing you in my email box whether it’s unbelievably early or unbelievably late. Thankful it keeps showing up. Your columns are tender and thought provoking. You are very tender-hearted, no matter your protestations to the contrary!
Betsey - March 11, 2023 2:51 am
Thanks, I was afraid something had happened to you!

Thanks for the update, Sean. Technology sometimes sucks, but it looks like we have to have it; it’s got us by the proverbial short-and-curlies.
John Gossett - March 11, 2023 3:01 am

Ok Pone. Good job. No problems with Substack. But since everybody missed their big cry today, I recommend that the ones that haven’t heard of it look up the Teddy Stoddard Story on Google or YTube. I know you know it. But for those that don’t, it’ll give em their daily fix. Great story. I’m thinking it’s true too. Still want to hear the details on that single wide Xmas party and whether the home owners insurance covered it!
Patrick Wolfe - March 11, 2023 3:38 am
Thank you for sharing. I figure this is an itch you have to scratch. I enjoy your scratch in’.

Why thank you! I’ve not had any glitches, but I do like the new platform even better!
Our church is having glitchy tech stuff, too, so it’s everywhere.
George Robert Leach - March 11, 2023 4:40 am
Glad you have feet and legs. You’d be handicapped without them. Sucking in air is important too.

Thank you. Your down-to-Earth, genuine and human style warms my heart. You have a gift for capturing the everyday miracles of connection and shared vulnerability, often with humor and joy. You matter. You are appreciated.
Suzanne - March 11, 2023 6:57 am
You have helped get through every day, Sean, by my reading and pondering over your golden nuggets of lessons, advice, humor, and sheer joy and positivity.
I wish you would go on a speaking, tour engagement.
I want to meet you and see what kind, sweet person….uh, that would be YOU, young man….”shows me the way” everyday.

Bless your little heart!! And, I really do mean, bless your little heart!! Believe me! I feel your pain!! It seems as though that I have spent years of my life on the phone with technical helpers. I have a hearing problem, so that doesn’t help matters. A hearing problem coupled with my other problems of not being able to comprehend any language other than English and being extremely handicapped when it comes to technology……well I just might as well forget it. All of that is why I say from the bottom of mine, “Bless your little heart,” and a great big “THANK YOU!” I just couldn’t get along without your daily column.
Michael Stransky - March 11, 2023 10:57 am
we love you Sean keep uo the good free work,, Thanks
Mike Brown - March 11, 2023 11:56 am
Sean, you are an inspiration to aspiring writers everywhere. Many are so talented yet afraid of rejection and then they read your articles, your story, the stories of your readers. I connect with your writing because I served as a pastor in Walton County while attending Baptist College of FL in Graceville until my wife and I packed up and headed to seminary. I celebrated my 50th birthday there. I left seminary in New Orleans, disillusioned and conflicted about Baptist life, and found myself preaching, coaching and teaching after we moved to Enterprise, Daleville and Ozark before moving to Ocala. By the time we retired to Newnan, Georgia, our five grandchildren became our motivation to travel and entertain them. They became my inspiration to author southern stories when not traveling. I found ministering to and being ministered by other authors became my ministry of sorts. I find it curious Jesus never left any writings but inspired others to write best sellers sharing his stories. In 2018, Hometown Novel Writers Association, Inc., Newnan, GA began with a rag-tag gang of local authors with one mission: introduce local authors to local audiences south of Atlanta. As of 2023, Hometown Novel Writers Association offers writer workshops, critique groups, author programs, and a book fair. And, we do so on a shoestring budget because there are too many greedy charlatans feeding on the hopes and dreams of aspiring writers. When you come back to Newnan again, I missed meeting you during the Southern Lit Fest last summer, I hope to meet you. I know a lot of folks who would like to chat a while with you. Mike

I can certainly relate as lost a husband in 1982 to suicide and just lost our younger son to the same this past July. I will never understand!

I think I know why some people aren’t getting your column in their e-mail. It’s because some days I get two copies (one for each eye)!
Judeene Blankenship - March 12, 2023 1:35 pm
March 10 is the last column I received. 🙁

Julie Cotten - March 16, 2023 1:53 pm
Sean, love your column every day! I don’t know how you come up with new , relevant, funny, touching… I now get to see your art work along with the column.even better!!. Enjoyed seeing you in Columbus recently. Great time spent there that afternoon. Could you come to our Performing Arts Center in Dadeville for a fundraiser show? There’s lots of money on Lake Martin but our little town, Dadeville, doesn’t see it spent on the kids. We have a nonprofit that could use you. Take a look at us and think about it. Thanks, Julie
Thanks for what you share!

Thanks, Sean. If you’re ever in Jasper, AL let me know. We have some crime stories you wouldn’t believe.
Bill - March 22, 2023 10:43 pm
I spent an hour on the phone last night with Raffy at Microsoft Support, somewhere far, far away. Years ago, I got my hearing aids to “pair” with my iPhone, and the angels sang. I thought I would once again try to pair them with my HP laptop. But not even Raffy and Microsoft could fix HP. So, Sean, if I was you, I’d blame HP. Their steak sauce is okay, but their computers won’t hunt. BTW, I always get your emails, but then, I have three email addresses because I am anal. Hope you kill it in Nashville.
Gail Landgraf - March 23, 2023 11:45 am
